Cobo Vault overview

Cobo Vault is one of the most durable products on the market. The device itself is completely isolated, meaning it does not interact with other devices at any point. 3G/4G, WiFi, Bluetooth and NFC are not supported so these agents cannot be used as attack tools.

Even when charging, the battery needs to be removed and charged via a separate stand. To update the software, users need to insert an SD card (on which the update is installed) into the back of the device.

The only input Cobo Vault receives from the outside world comes from the camera, which scans QR codes with a smartphone app. With this system, users can spend the funds they keep on the device without using any cables. However, when compared to other devices, it is a little more difficult to perform transactions with Cobo Vault. Camera usage is similar to SafePal wallet.

Unlike many hardware wallet suppliers that offer only paper-made tools to back up the recovery phrase, Cobo comes with a durable metal case to place the letters in. The letters can be arranged to form a 24-word recovery phrase, so users can safely back up their private keys.

What makes the product different from others is undoubtedly the device itself. The display and battery are housed in an almost military-grade metal sheath that protects components from a high level of physical damage.

Pros and cons of Cobo Vault

Pros

  • Thanks to the large screen, users can benefit from a full keyboard.
  • The device never interacts with other devices, thus greatly reducing attack factors.
  • In case of physical manipulation, the device will erase itself.
  • Open source software.

Cons

  • One of the most expensive devices on the market.
  • It is possible to store many tokens, but Cobo Vault does not support as many individual blockchains as some of its competitors.
  • The process of sending coins from the device is a bit cumbersome.

Final ideas

When hardware wallet manufacturers launch their products as a vault, this is often not really true. But with its offering, Cobo takes this concept one step further. Cobo Vault is an offline (and waterproof) crypto wallet stored in a military-grade case.

At nearly $500, the Cobo Vault doesn’t fall into the affordable category. But few wallets we’ve reviewed so far can block digital and physical attack agents as well as Cobo Vault. Therefore, although the ease of use and portability must be sacrificed, it is obvious that the product is designed especially for users who hold large amounts of cryptocurrencies and seek durable and long-term storage solutions.
