How to Keep Your IOTA Cryptocurrency Safe

IOTA operates as a distributed ledger built for sensor networks, industrial supply chains, patient records along with identity credentials. Speculators trade the native token, IOTA, on exchanges. Because the token carries market value, thieves have stolen it in the past. Owners must apply specific protective measures.

The IOTA Foundation publishes Firefly, its official wallet. Firefly creates a twenty-four-word recovery phrase that reconstructs the private key. Write the phrase on acid free paper with indelible ink. Store the paper inside a sealed envelope in a home safe or a bank safe deposit box. Add a second layer of protection by splitting the phrase into two halves and placing each half in a separate location.

Firefly supports IOTA tokens but also NFTs issued on the IOTA network. The application encrypts the wallet file with a user defined password. The developers release signed binaries for Windows, macOS in addition to Linux. Verify the signature before installation.

Cold storage removes the private key from any internet connected device. Generate the seed on an offline computer. Print the twenty-four-word phrase on a laser printer connected by USB cable. After printing, power cycle the printer to clear its memory. Store the paper in a fireproof bag inside a locked drawer.

Avoid public printers or photocopiers. Inkjet printers bleed over time - laser toner fuses to paper fibers and resists moisture. Write the date of creation on the backup. Replace any paper that shows yellowing or fading.

Fast Fact

Encrypt any digital copy of the seed with AES-256. Store the encrypted file on a password protected USB drive. Keep the drive in a tamper evident bag. Online password managers store encrypted vaults on remote servers - use a manager that supports zero knowledge architecture.

When used outside cryptocurrency, iota denotes a minute quantity.

On 22 November 2024, one IOTA traded at $0.1884.

Iota is the ninth letter of the Greek alphabet.

Each additional encryption layer raises the effort required for unauthorized access. Store hardware wallets in a locked safe. Never photograph the seed phrase. Never entrust the backup to acquaintances. Periodic inspection of the paper backup detects degradation early. Replace damaged copies promptly.
